Simpson County Fire Coordinator, Charlie Valadie, resigned during Monday, June 1, 2020 Board of Supervisors meeting. With the resignation of Valadie, the board selected Jason Busby on the recommendation of the Simpson County Fire Association as the new fire coordinator for the county to start June 15, 2020. Controversy within the county fire association led to the withdrawal of Magee and Mendenhall Fire departments from the association. The board in a 3-2 vote with Donny Welch and Mitchell Chatman opposing opted to not renew the position of Assistant Fire Coordinator that is presently held by Phillip Magee. Mr. Magee spoke before the board and advised in his opinion the termination of the position was not a wise move for the citizens of Simpson County. Supervisor Chatman asked why the association would not want an additional person for check and balances? Supervisor Welch questioned the concern of not having an Assistant Fire Coordinator.
The board approved to appoint John Kilpatrick as the Emergency Medical Services Director for Simpson County.
The board approved to continue with hired services for an additional cutting at various county locations awaiting ruling on inmates returning to work duty.
Eagle Scout Robert Earl Summerline III of BSC Troop 85, was recognized by the board for his accomplishments obtaining Eagle Scout.
Approval was given for paying the monthly electric bill at the old Harrisville Fire Department which will be occupied by the county ambulance services.
The board approved deleting obsolete, broken, and lost equipment from the EMSOF Inventory as reported by AMR.
In sheriff’s business, a public hearing was held for Justice Department JAG Grant to buy uniforms.
Tommy Joe Harvey, Chancery Clerk, presented the Simpson County Election Commissioners who have qualified for the upcoming election. District 1- Calvin Edwards, District 2 – Eugene Blair, District 3 – Donna Magee, District 4 – Diane McPhail, and District 5 – Wanda Bridges. All papers have been approved and certified.
Simpson County school board leases were approved.
John Kilpatrick updated board on the mask distribution. Mask were distributed Saturday, May 30, 2020. Kilpatrick reminded everyone about the census and anyone who has not filed needs to as soon as possible.
