This past week, the Cougars celebrated Homecoming 2024 and it culminated in a 40-14 beat down of the MHSAA class 1A contenders, the Taylorsville Tartars.
The Cougars were carried by their defense and special teams accounted for 4 TDs of their own.
The Cougars had 2 blocked punts that resulted in touchdowns (Samuel Smith with the recovery for TD and Jack Lee with block and recovery for TD), 1 strip sack returned for a touchdown (Jacob Coulson 36 yd TD return) and 3 interceptions, one returned for a touchdown by Samuel Smith to give the Cougars a 7-6 lead after Taylorsville had jumped out with the 1st TD of the game. After the Cougars got the lead, they never looked back and outscored the Tartars 27-8 in the 2nd half. Braden Duncan and Barrett McKenney were back in the lineup for the Cougars and both had an immediate impact. Duncan with 2 interceptions and McKenney with a TD run to seal the game in the 4th. Hayes Berry completed a 27-yard TD pass to Chanse Funchess to round out the scoring.
The Cougars (2-3) will play host to the PCS Bobcats next week in “The Hole” to try to even their record back to .500 when the 6A team from Hattiesburg travels north to Mendenhall this Friday night.
Last year, the Cougars defeated the PCS Bobcats 21-14.
