Congressman Guest and Colleagues Send Second Letter to Yellen Expressing Concern over IRS Proposal
Washington, D.C. – Yesterday, Congressman Michael Guest (MS-03) joined Congressman Tom Emmer (MN-06) and 200 of their colleagues in a letter to Treasury Secretary Yellen to reassert their concerns with the Administration’s proposal to expand the data collected on Americans’ bank accounts.
You can read the full text of the letter here.
Last week, Congressman Guest also cosponsored Congressman Drew Ferguson’s (GA-03) bill, H.R. 5586 – Prohibiting IRS Financial Surveillance Act. The bill would “prohibit the implementation of new requirements to report bank account deposits and withdrawals.” Yesterday, House Democrats blocked H.R. 5586 from coming to the House floor for a vote.
“The White House plan to review American bank accounts is an invasion of privacy, increases the risk of data breaches, & creates an immense reporting burden on financial institutions. There is no reason that justifies a government surveillance program that allows the IRS to monitor and track the bank transactions of Americans. The passage of this bill would secure the privacy of U.S. citizens from this potential government overreach,” Guest said.
