The sport of volleyball is growing in popularity throughout the state of Mississippi. With the increased number of volleyball players, more volleyball-related injuries are being seen among young athletes in our state. Jonathan Pierce, who serves as the athletic trainer for Simpson Academy, said that just a decade ago there were no school teams in our area, but now they’re everywhere.

When it comes to volleyball injuries, Pierce said should injuries are common among volleyball players because it is an overhead sport. He said stabilizing the shoulder in the preseason is important, as well as flexibility and core strength. Knee and ankle injuries are also common.

Another concern when it comes to volleyball and other sports is injuries that result from overuse, according to Pierce. He said athletes should stop when something begins hurting because it is easier to fix problems or injuries when they are caught early.
