The Magee Board of Aldermen approved stripping of the Co-Op Road. This particular road is heavily traveled by large vehicles/trucks.
Mayor Dale Berry called the February 6, 2024 Board of Aldermen meeting to order. Matt Harrison led in the opening prayer which was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.
A representative of Core and Main Company appeared before the Board concerning purchasing automatic meter readers for the city water system. No board action was taken.
The culvert on Colonial Drive will be paved by the city crew. The Simpson County Board of Supervisors are assisting the city in the use of a piece of equipment.
Police Chief Shane Little requested an executive meeting following the regular meeting to discuss personal matters.
Penny Aguirre informed the board of a CMPDD grant our city has received which allows for 2 interns for city hiring. Mrs. Aguirre gave a report on the condition of one of the trailer parks in the city. Some of the homes are not in compliance of city codes. Penny is working with the new owner of the park to rectify the problems.
A. Zoning hearing will be held on March 12, 2024 at 5:30 PM at the City Hall for the purpose of deterring whether or not a conditional use shall be be granted to the owners of 106 Main Avenue North.
The continued problems of bulk trash in the city was discussed. Mrs. Aguirre is working with the apartment complexes in the City for a solution to their problems. The City Crew is not allowed to pick up mattresses, sofas, and other furniture.
The Community House H-Vac is completed and siding is complete. The preservation committee is checking on possibly using the original ceiling in the building. Allison Berch has been instrumental in securing quotes and contractors for the Community House.
Charlie Valadie reminded the public Sever Weather Awareness Week begins February 12, 2024. Valadie reported all sirens in the city are working. Alderman Thompson questioned who was responsible for trash in the area near Walmart. Charlie will pursue this information.
Jimmy Zilla reported 141 youth have signed up for baseball. Jimmy said, “the numbers will increase by the weekend.” Zilla reported on the rental of the fields by area teams. Rental will be $500 per year for non local teams and $250 per year for local teams. Local teams based in Simpson County and have 50% Simpson county youth on their team will receive top priority. High school games are scheduled this week for girls and guys teams from Mt Zion. Thirty-seven teams are expected for a one day tournament in Magee. The board requested Jimmy check into repairing pot holes in the parking lot of the Sportsplex.
Animal Control Officer Benny Blair informed the board the dog pound would not be moved to McNair Springs due to the building already in use. Mayor Berry stated he thought there was another vacant building in the city that might work for the dog pound. Benny reported 5 puppies had been adopted.
Dusty Drennan reported on the progress at the airport. Dusty is volunteering his time to assist with repairs for two weeks. All runway lights are now working along with continued work on the gas and pumps. Dusty feels files need to be moved from Airport to City Hall with no money exchange at the airport. A key policy is to be implemented . The Airport Board will make suggestions.
Joe McNulty is President of the Airport Board. Larry Partridge is Vice President and Susie Bourne Secretary. The board will meet the 4th Tuesday of the month.
Susie Bourne, who also volunteers at the airport, changed all exterior lights and cleaned areas in the building.
At this time, the Board has decided to manage the Airport with volunteers until a new hire for a city wide maintenance man. The new position will be posted once the job description is completed.
Kara Lucas reported the opening of Simpson Outdoors; continued work at Walmart; building at Millcreek; remodel at McAllister”s Deli; and T Mobile to open soon.
Shane Steel, Code enforcement, reported the owner of the building on Main Street which is in such bad shape in the back of the building has 14 days to submit a plan of improvement.
Buck Craft, Fire Chief, reported every business in the City of Magee will be inspected within the coming year. 19 fire calls were received during January. The department has been busy testing fire hose. The test is very difficult due to the weight of the hose. The fire hydrant checks will begin soon. Each hydrant will be repainted as well as receive a cleaning of the area around the hydrant.
