Job Title: Park and Recreation Assistant
Location: Magee, Mississippi
Department: Parks and Recreation
Reports To: Parks and Recreation Director
Position Overview:
The City of Magee Park and Recreation Assistant will provide support in maintaining and improving public parks, recreational facilities, and community programs. The ideal candidate will have a strong passion for community engagement, outdoor activities, and providing excellent service to residents. The Park and Recreation Assistant will assist with park maintenance, event coordination, program support, and other daily operations of the department to ensure the city’s parks are safe, clean, and accessible for all.
Key Responsibilities:
● Park Maintenance Support: Assist in the routine maintenance of parks and recreational facilities, including mowing, landscaping, cleaning, trash removal, and ensuring that all facilities are safe and well-maintained.
● Event and Program Support: Help coordinate and set up recreational programs and community events, including sports leagues, fitness classes, picnics, and special events held in the parks.
● Facility Inspection: Perform regular inspections of parks, playgrounds, and sports fields to ensure all equipment is in working order, report damages or hazards, and assist with repairs and maintenance.
● Customer Service: Provide excellent customer service by assisting park visitors with information on park amenities, program schedules, and event details. Address public inquiries and report concerns to supervisors.
● Recreation Program Assistance: Assist with the planning, setup, and implementation of recreation programs for all age groups, including sports activities, camps, arts and crafts, and special interest classes.
● Equipment Management: Maintain and organize recreational equipment and supplies, ensuring they are clean, functional, and ready for use.
● Safety and Compliance: Monitor park activities to ensure compliance with safety guidelines, park rules, and regulations. Assist in enforcing facility rules and regulations to ensure a safe environment for all users.
● Inventory and Supplies: Assist in maintaining an inventory of supplies, tools, and materials required for park maintenance and recreational programs. Help with ordering or restocking items as needed.
● Administrative Support: Assist with scheduling events, registering participants for programs, preparing reports, and completing other administrative tasks as directed by the Parks and Recreation Director.
● Community Outreach: Support community outreach initiatives by promoting programs and events through social media, flyers, or other communication channels to engage the public and increase participation in recreational activities.
● Environmental Stewardship: Assist with sustainability efforts, including the proper disposal of waste, recycling programs, and efforts to protect and preserve natural resources in the city’s parks and recreational areas.
● Other Duties: Perform other duties as assigned by the Parks and Recreation Director or other supervisory staff to support the department’s operations.
Preferred Qualifications:
● CPR, First Aid, or Lifeguard certification.
● Experience working with youth or community recreation programs.
● Knowledge of local and state park regulations and safety standards.
● Experience with basic landscaping or groundskeeping practices.
● Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) are a plus but not required.
Physical Requirements:
● Ability to lift, carry, and move heavy objects (up to 50 lbs).
● Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, rain, and cold.
● Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and perform physical tasks for extended periods.
● Ability to use maintenance tools and equipment safely and effectively.
