MAGEE, Miss. — The City of Magee Public Works Department remained on duty Sunday as winter weather moved through the area, taking proactive steps to ensure public safety.

City crews were on hand throughout the day in anticipation of potential problems, sanding bridges Sunday afternoon as a precaution against icy conditions.

John Hosey with the City of Magee Emergency Management Department said the city has been closely monitoring National Weather Service updates. . Those updates have been regularly shared with the public by Mayor Mark Grubbs and Alderman Lawana Thompson on the City of Magee Facebook page.

Officials reported that winter weather alerts, including those for freezing rain and sleet, have been canceled. However, residents are advised that cold temperatures are expected to continue dropping overnight.

Magee City Hall will remain open for business on Monday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Garbage collection for Monday, January 27, will proceed as scheduled; however, residents are advised that inclement weather and potentially icy road conditions could cause delays.

In response to the winter storm, Simpson County Public Schools will be closed on Monday, January 26, 2026.

The winter system has had widespread impacts across the state. An ice storm has left more than 120,000 Mississippians without power, according to statewide reports, as utility crews continue restoration efforts.

Residents are encouraged to use caution when traveling and to stay updated through official city and weather channels.
