Magee Alderman discussed plans for 4th of July during their regular scheduled meeting Tuesday, June 6, 2023.
Fireworks will end the evening of celebration at the sportscomplex starting at dusk. Mayor Dale Berry would like to see a water slide added for the children’s entertainment before the fireworks. The board tabled the decision until more details are given on the location at the park and safety issues. Mayor Berry would like to add music entertainment of Cadie Calhoun prior to the firework show. Alderman Mark Grubbs excused himself from the discussion due to his relationship with Cadie. With Grubbs unable to vote only left two board members. The board was unable to vote due to not having quorum with the absence of Alderman 2 Matthew Hickman and vacancy of Alderman 3 position. The entertainment was tabled at this time until all alderman are present to vote.
Mayor Berry announced that Speaker of the House Phillip Gunn advised the City of Magee would receive a $500,000 grant in September. The money has been ear marked for improvements at the City Park.
Sammy Tebo was the only candidate to qualify for the special election of Alderman Vacancy of Ward 3. The city is talking with the Secretary of State to see if an election is necessary with only one candidate qualifying.
Jimmy Padgett announced his retirement Tuesday evening. The board presented him with a plaque for his years of service for the City of Magee.
Mayor Berry advised he had been contacted by the property owner at the 5-way stop in Magee. The land owner does not want any type business on his property other than ones he has personally given permission.
Parks And Recreation Director Jimmy Zilla announced All-Stars are being selected and tournaments will start in the coming weeks. The board approved travel for Jimmy and Daniel Decker to attend and represent the city. Zila announced a large tournament will take place at the Jimmy Clyde Sportsplex at the end of June over three days. Larger crowds are expected during this tournament.
The 1977 fire engine in possession of the fire department will age out this year. The board agreed to declare the engine surplus and allow the vehicle to be sold and all proceeds to go toward a new engine.
Gaye Magee Sullivan, with the group Citizens for a Better Magee, met before the board to discuss issues they have and see with the city. The group would like to see street improvements. Gaye asked the board if they have a 3 to 5 year Strategic plan in play. The board did not answer the question direct but would see what could be done with upcoming budget. Another issue the group had was code Enforcement. The group would like to know if there was plan to hold citizens accountable, responsible and make sure maintenance issues were being addressed. Lastly, the group would like to see stronger crime prevention within the city. The board agreed to look into these issues and request.
A major accident occurred earlier in the day involving a tanker truck overturning on the frontage road at Hwy 49. Most department heads were at the scene working and unable to attend the meeting.
The July 4th scheduled meeting was moved to Wednesday, July 5, 2023 at 6:00 due to the Tuesday, July 4th meeting falling on a holiday.
Meeting entered executive session to discuss legal matters.
