If you have visited the Jimmy Clyde Sportsplex during the last few months, you have probably noticed—things are happening!

Under the direction of Parks and Recreation Department head Susan Mangum, along with

Montez Chatman, Tyshun Newsome, Sean Necaise, and Quinston Woodard are taking place almost daily at the Park.

are taking place almost daily at the park.  And let me tell you, their hard work is showing!

On Wednesday, September 30, a brand-new sign was installed at the entrance to the Sportsplex showing visitors exactly where each field is located. Anybody who has ever pulled into a ballpark wondering, “Now, where in the world is Field 4?” will appreciate this sign!

The visitors are going to be thrilled!

A big thank you goes to Chris Jones with CJ Signs for a job well done. The sign looks great! A very special thank you also goes to Peoples Bank for sponsoring the new sign.

But the improvements certainly don’t stop there.

Trees have been trimmed, areas have been pressure washed, and the press boxes have gotten a much-needed facelift. Susan and her crew have been cleaning and painting, with Alderman Lawana Thompson also rolling up her sleeves and helping with the work.

And then there’s the concession stand!

The concession stand has received a complete overhaul and is now being operated by Main Street Magee. Tiffany Kinslow with Main Street Magee has worked tirelessly cleaning, organizing, and restocking. At the first tournament they hosted, Tiffany said the feedback on both the food and the cleanliness was fabulous.

Now comes a BIG weekend!

The MAIS Overall Softball Tournament is scheduled for the weekend of October 3, and the Jimmy Clyde Sportsplex will be filled with players, coaches, families, and fans cheering on their teams.

And speaking of the tournament…Tiffany can always use some help in the concession stand. Hint, hint!

Plans also include a coaches’ lounge, and food donations are needed. If you can provide a snack, finger food, or something easy for the coaches to grab during the tournament, please take it by the Sportsplex. Someone will make sure your donation gets to the right place.

It takes a lot of people working together to prepare for an event of this size, and I am excited for our visitors to see the improvements being made at the Jimmy Clyde Sportsplex.

There is a possibility the tournament schedule could be affected by the weather. MageeNews.com will post any changes as soon as information becomes available.

Good things are happening at the Sportsplex—and people are noticing!
