Carmen Yates had a serving spirit. From the time she was 9 years old, all she wanted to be was a nurse. She graduated from South Mississippi Charity Hospital (RN) and William Carey University (BSN). She made that dream come true and worked many places for over 40 years. She loved to talk about all her babies she helped deliver over the years.
She married her hometown sweetheart who served in the Marine Corps and together they traveled the world. Her heart centered on her kids and grandchildren. She was eagerly awaiting the birth of her first great-grandchild.
Her passions included watching sports, mainly the Taylorsville Tartars and Ole Miss Rebels; her love of animals, and crocheting.
She was preceded in death by her son, Keith Eugene Yates; father, Chalmer Eugene Smith; mother, Virgie Elizabeth West Smith; brother, Walter Smith; and sister, Janie V. Smith Ashley.
Survivors include her husband of sixty years, Marshall Paul Yates, Sr. of Taylorsville, MS; son, Marty Yates (Penny) of Huntsville, AL; daughters, Denise Yates Martin (David) of Hendersonville, TN, and Kim Yates Leavitt (David) of Bay Springs, MS; grandchildren, Shelby Yates of White Bluff, TN, Claire Yates Suski (Cruise) of Nashville, TN, Daniel Leavitt of Bay Springs, MS, Grace Leavitt Schrimpshire (Matthew) of Ellisville, MS, Taylor Martin of Chicago, IL, and Caleb Martin of Hendersonville, TN; brother, David Smith (Delores) of Mize, MS; sisters, Jo Ann Smith Bedgood of Bay Springs, MS, and Bonnie Smith Temple of Taylorsville, MS; and a host of other family members and friends.
