William Carey University’s Carey Opera & Musical Theater will present its spring opera, “The Pirates of Penzance,” March 4 and March 6 at Thomas Fine Arts Center. Curtain time is 7 p.m.
“The Pirates of Penzance” is a two-act comic opera by Gilbert and Sullivan – and a fan favorite since its debut in New York City in 1879.
The action follows the adventures of Frederic, a young man mistakenly apprenticed to work for a band of quirky pirates until his 21st birthday. Once free, he embraces life and falls in love with Mabel, the daughter of the wealthy Major General. With a strict vow of duty, feisty pirate antics, and playful deception, the show is a whirlwind of witty songs, playful romance, and uproarious humor. And it all comes right in the end.
“Carey Opera’s production will be fully staged and costumed – and performed in English. Most of the cast members are music students, and theatre students are helping with the set. ‘Pirates of Penzance’ will make you laugh – it’s fun and entertaining for all ages,” said Dr. Susan Ruggiero, who is directing the show.
General admission tickets are $10.
WCU will also perform a special children’s matinee of “The Pirates of Penzance” on Monday, March 3, at 10 a.m. Tickets are free, but parents and teachers who want to bring children to see the opera must make reservations.
