Update: Car fire update: vehicle that was burning struck a fuel can in the highway & ignited it. Apparently, several items were in the highway causing traffic hazards. Just to the north, another vehicle struck a truck toolbox. (according to Magee Fire Department)

At approximately 11:15 Friday night, September 24, 2021, the Magee Fire Department was called out for a fully engulfed car.  The car was located near Cole Tractor in the South bound lane.

Citizens on the scene reported as they approached the area the car was blazing with smoke bellowing into the air. The car was fully off the highway onto the shoulder of the road.  Local law enforcement stopped traffic on 49 south bound causing lengthly back ups.  Eventually, traffic was rerouted through the Sanatorium on old Hwy 49.

The north bound lane was not affected.

One citizen reported a man walking on the highway with a guitar strapped to his back who stayed on scene.

(Sue note:  I am still trying to get additional information.)

Thanks to Dot Nichols for the pictures.  As you can tell, Dot was in one of the first stopped cars when the accident was discovered.

(I was on scene and the video is posted below).
