Braxton, Mississippi – The Braxton Volunteer Fire Department, now known as Braxton Fire Rescue, is proud to celebrate 50 years of dedicated service to the community in 2026. What began in April of 1976 as a small group of committed men has grown into a modern, well-equipped department serving the citizens of Braxton and surrounding areas.
The department was originally chartered by four individuals—Hank Jensen, Robert Taylor, Bern Herrin, and Jimmy Morgan—who shared a vision of protecting and serving their community. With limited resources at the time, the department began operations using a leased 1940 GMC fire truck from the Mendenhall Fire Department, housed in a hay barn near town. Hank Jensen served as the department’s first Fire Chief.
As the years progressed, the department steadily expanded its capabilities. In 1979, a two-bay fire station was constructed next to Braxton Town Hall, where it remains today with several additions made over time. In 1978, Randy Hays joined the department and became Fire Chief in 1981—a position he held with distinction for 35 years, while also serving as Simpson County Fire Coordinator.
Under Chief Hays’ leadership, the department saw significant growth and modernization. In 1990, a rescue unit was established to enhance emergency response services. In 1991, the department officially changed its name to Braxton Fire Rescue and secured its first brand-new fire truck through a Community Development Block Grant—an achievement that also benefited neighboring departments.
Throughout the years, Braxton Fire Rescue continued to build its fleet and services, including the addition of a restored 1954 Ford fire truck donated by attorney Mr. Cox. The department has since acquired multiple fire engines, including new trucks in 1991, 2001, 2007, and 2025, as well as a 2009 Ferrara Custom Pumper added in 2017. Investments in modern equipment such as TNT rescue tools, updated SCBA air packs, and advanced turnout gear have further strengthened the department’s ability to respond effectively and safely.
In 2019, a second station was constructed on Harrisville Braxton Road to better serve the growing community. In 2021, the department honored Chief Randy Hays—who passed away in 2016 while still actively serving—by dedicating the fire station in his name and introducing a new department logo.
Today, Braxton Fire Rescue is led by Fire Chief Jason Busby and Assistant Chief Anthony “Slick” Morrow, both of whom bring more than 30 years of service and experience to the department. The team includes members ranging from one year to nearly four decades of service, reflecting a strong tradition of commitment and community involvement.
To commemorate its 50th anniversary, Braxton Fire Rescue will host a major community celebration and fundraiser on Saturday, May 2, 2026. The event promises a full day of activities for all ages, including:
