The Magee Board of Alderman met Tuesday, November 2, 2021 for their regular scheduled meeting.
Mayor Dale Berry reminded everyone of upcoming events. Veterans Day celebration will take place at Good Water Baptist Church at 11:00 AM. A second program will be held at Simpson County Academy at 12:30 where the senior class will honor all veterans with a program.
A ceremony honoring Coach Earnest Jaynes will take place Sunday, November 14th at 1:30 PM in Ural Everett Park in Magee. Everyone is invited to attend.
Mingle in Magee is scheduled to take place on Thursday, November 4, 2021. A movie will be shown in Ural Everett Park. Vendors will sell merchandise. Food trucks will be near Main Street. Downtown shops will open allowing people to get a start on the holiday season.
Magee Christmas parade is scheduled for Tuesday, November 30, 2021. All participates need to register with the Chamber.
Mayor Berry advised Crazy Day was a huge success.
The board set a workshop for Monday, November 8th at 5 PM for discussion of several items. The workshop is open to the public.
Dot Nichols, with Keep Magee Beautiful, updated the board about the Christmas decorations for the city. All decorations that have been ordered have arrived. Lights will be installed before the Christmas parade. The lights were installed in Ural Everett Park Tuesday. The old city decorations will be utilized in the city in other areas. Nichols did ask the board to consider purchasing two security cameras for Ural Everett Park. Mrs. Nichols explained a problem with homeless sleeping in the park still exist.
Ricky Anderson, spokesperson for the Cemetery committee, met before the board updating information on the City Cemetery. The committee meets once a month. The group has been busy with cleaning. The committee is looking into applying for a 5013-C allowing the committee to accept donations and conduct fundraisers. The group plans to tag voluntary trees and scrubs that are popping up in the cemetery for the city workers to remove. A discussion on the price for burial spots was discussed. The board would like to obtain information from surrounding cemeteries and look at a new charge for the plots.
Chief Chris Jones advised the board that Bill Broadhead, Principal at Magee High School, approached him about traffic flow on Choctaw Street. Choctaw Street is narrow and traffic flowing two ways during student drop off and pickup in a safety issue for the children. Broadhead is asking the board to consider making the street one way during pickup and drop off times. The board will discuss this issue during their Monday work session.
The City is considering a garbage can only policy for garbage pickup effective January 1, 2021. More details on this issue will be available when a decision is made.
The meeting entered into executive session to discuss a personnel issue.
The board approved to move their meeting time to 6:00 p.m. beginning December 7, 2021 and forward.
