Magee Board of Alderman met Tuesday, April 4, 2023 for their regular scheduled meeting.
All board members, mayor, and attorney were present.
Mayor Dale Berry advised MDOT engineer Albert White met with the Lions Club in Magee and informed the Lions Club a new red light will be placed on the south end of town on Highway 49 in the future. The light will be located near the Shell Station. The intersection at Siloam Road will be closed just as several other intersections have been closed in the city. Vehicles traveling north can make a left turn unto Siloam Road. Any vehicle on Siloam Road wanting to go north will travel south to a newly installed red light at the Shell gas station to turn left. The decision was not made by the city but by MDOT. MDOT has performed numerous safety studies before arriving at this decision.
Bart Ballard, of Ballard Engineering, was present to speak to the board concerning the CDBG Grant. Two bids were received which were very close in price. Both bids were well over the budgeted cost. Modifications to the bid will be made and new bids will be received.
The board approved issuing an emergency order for repairs to the lights at the spots complex. Shivers Electric has located 2 connectors that might be an option and save the city a substantial amount of money.
Airport Manager Ashley Steele advised the Jet A tank should be fully functional and operating by Thursday.
The zoning board will have a public hearing on April 11, 2023 at 5:30 in the City Hall concerning amendments to the cannabis ordinances.
Public Works Supervisor Tim Bray advised he would like to send 4 city employees to a Muller Class concerning parts, installation and general operation. The class is located in Jackson and is free to attend.
Pot hole patrol will start Wednesday for hot mix and will continue as long as weather conditions permit.
Phillip Magee, building Inspector, advised roof work at City Hall and Police Station would start within the next 3 weeks. Magee is reaching out to contractors concerning the roof at the city barn for needed repair.
Code Enforcer Shane Steele advised he had met with the local apartment mangers concerning clean-up and issues of the properties. The managers are working to accompany the needs and request.
Before the meeting dismissed, Alderman Mark Grubbs questioned why two city workers were at a private residence doing work earlier Tuesday morning. Mayor Berry admitted he was the one responsible for the workers and would take full responsibility. Grubbs questioned if the work was legal? Berry replied “i don’t know.” Heated comments were made by the Mayor “advising everyone fudges.” Attorney Marc McMillan called order to the meeting and stated anyone who had legal issues could address him privately. McMillian stated, this was the first he was hearing of this information.” (Catch the video below)
The meeting was recessed until the next board meeting Tuesday, March 18, 2023.
