Alderman at Large Angel Brister and Alderman Ward 1 Whitney Baker were both honored for their service to the City of Magee by the Magee Board of Alderman as their terms comes to an end. Alderman Brister was not present at the meeting. Angel’s mother, Dianne McPhail, accepted the plaque on her behalf.
Mayor Dale Berry read and advised the board of a letter of resignation due to the retirement of Police Chief Randy Crawford effective June 30, 2021.
The swearing in ceremony for the new alderman will be Thursday, July 1, 2021 starting at 5:00 at the Civic Center in Magee. The public is invited to the ceremony. The new Board (Mark Grubbs, Matthew Hickman, Lane Steele, Patrick Brown, Sue Honea) and Mayor Berry will be sworn in.
The agenda, minutes, and claims report were approved by the Board.
A part for the splash pad should arrive later this week and hopefully the play equipment can be installed. The city is looking into investing into some additional splash pad equipment.
The City will not be able to assist the city league’s All-Star teams as in years past. The problem results from the lack of support from the parents association with parents not working concessions during the season. The proceeds from the concessions is what helps to purchase All-Star uniforms. This year, the concession stand required hiring people to work. Due to paying concession workers, the parents association had fewer funds to operate.
Newly appointed Building Inspector Phillip Magee has been busy at work. 6 electrical inspections and 8 gas inspections were completed this past week. Phillip Magee brought to the Boards attention a few changes made to the work schedule. If orders are received one day, the orders will be worked the following day. Magee advised a few property clean up letters have been returned. Magee is continuing to work on these issues.
Ashley Steele approached the Board and brought them up to date on the fuel system being down at the airport. Lightning hit the pump a few weeks ago causing inability to process fuel for the pilots. The system in place is obsolete. The company will no longer supply parts for this system. The airport had no choice but to upgrade. The City is awaiting the results of the insurance claim to see how much will be needed for the new system. Steele advised everyday the system is down revenue is being lost due to pilots not buying fuel.
Joey Sullivan met before the board concerning the backed up sewage at the curve approaching his business at Sullivan Enterprises. During heavy rains, sewage and items associated with the sewage are washing onto his property. The City advised they are working on a fax and if the situation happens again they will clean the area up.
In Police matters, the Board approved Cody Blakeney to attend the full time police academy at Camp Shelby July 11 – 9/3. The Board approved Walter Burkett to attend a refresher class at the Simpson County Law Enforcement Academy. Angie Fortenberry was approved to attend the active shooter and workplace violence class at the Sheriff’s office 6/21 – 23rd at a cost of $300.00 which is reimbursable.
Brett Duncan, Charles R Prince Accounting Firm, approached the Board and updated them on the time lines to expect COVID money. Time lines could take as long as 90 days before any funds are received. Brett updated the board on how the financials looked and advised the books are reconciled through February.
The meeting adjourned into executive session.
