If an effort to educate our students and to provide a safe learning environment, the Simpson County School District has revised our current COVID-19 protocols.
Effective Thursday, Aug. 11, Simpson County School District will institute the following COVID-19 protocols for students affected by the coronavirus:
- Any student testing positive for COVID-19 will isolate at home for five days following a positive test result. Students may return as long as they are not having any symptoms. When they return, they will wear a mask for five days.
- Any student who is having symptoms (i.e., fever, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, runny nose) will be excluded from the school setting and tested for COVID-19 and will follow protocol for a positive or negative test result.
- Asymptomatic close contacts will remain at school and will be required to test on Day 3 and Day 5 following exposure. Students must wear a mask 10 days following exposure.
- Only students who are considered close contacts, or returning from isolation, will be required to wear masks. Masks for all other students are highly recommendation.
Students are encouraged to be up to date on their vaccinations in order to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in the school setting. To be considered up to date on vaccinations, students, age 5 and up, should have the first two series of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccination and a booster shot five months following the primary series.
All students and schools currently on quarantine may return to school on Monday, Aug. 15, as long as they are not having any symptoms. Those who were identified as close contacts must wear a mask upon return for five days. Any student who tested positive during the quarantine period needs to complete a five-day isolation period before returning to school.
For parents who have concerns regarding the district’s hotspot services, we are currently awaiting confirmation of a grant approval to continue those services.
During the 2020-21 School Year, SCSD received funding from the Mississippi Legislature through House Bill 1788 to expand access to broadband internet for our students. This funding was used to purchase community hotspots that were located across the district for our students to connect to Wi-Fi.
After funding from House Bill 1788 expired, the district applied for a one-year grant to continue the hotspot services for the 2021-22 School Year. The same was done for this 2022-23 School Year, and we are expecting to hear of approval any day now.
Please remember that all of our decisions regarding our district’s COVID-19 protocols have always been made with our students and staff’s health and safety at the forefront. Just as instruction is important, the same has been in regards to the safety of our students, staff and community members.
