Mississippi Federation of Republican Women Vote To Oppose Voter Initiative 65
Jackson, MS – The Mississippi Federation of Republican Women (MFRW) voted against Constitutional Amendment Voter Initiative 65 at its Annual Fall Board of Directors meeting held on the Zoom virtual platform on Saturday, October 3, 2020.
“Marijuana does not belong in the Mississippi Constitution, and there are serious consequences that could do real harm to the children of Mississippi,” said Keri Abernathy, President of MFRW.
MFRW voted unanimously to express opposition to the Constitutional Amendment Voter Initiative 65, which will be on the November 3rd ballot. These are the concerns of MFRW regarding 65’s Constitutional Amendment:
· Initiative 65 will allow children to receive marijuana products with parents consent;
· Initiative 65 allows access to unlimited edible products (for example, candies, brownies, etc.), oils, ointments, or other products;
· Initiative 65 allows marijuana dispensaries within 500 feet of schools, churches, and child care centers;
· Under Initiative 65, zoning for marijuana dispensaries cannot be governed by a municipality or county;
· The MS State Board of Health will be responsible for marijuana from seed to distribution. The MS State Board of Health has objected to this as it will seriously harm the agency’s function.
