George Stebbins Jackson, 84, of Raleigh, MS, passed away Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at The University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, MS. He was born Friday, May 16, 1941, in Laurel, MS.
Better known by his family and friends as “Gander,” George lived a long life filled with laughter, story-telling, and joking with others. At family gatherings and other events, Gander was often the center of attention as he told stories of pranks he pulled on his co-workers, family members, and friends. He worked the majority of his life in the oilfield industry and as a welder, but most people knew him as a cowboy. Gander loved the outdoors. He had an infinite love for horses, and any time he was able to ride, whether that be on trail rides or herding livestock, that is where he could be found. He also loved hunting and fishing and went every chance he got.
More than anything, Gander loved his family. His grandchildren and great grandchildren were his world. He made sure they knew he loved them, and he spent as much time with them as he could, mostly riding horses together until he got to the point that he could no longer ride.
Gander is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Rudy and Cassie Jackson; son and daughter-in-law, Rodney and Denise Jackson; grandson, Cody Jackson and his wife, Stephanie; grandson, Dustin Jackson and his wife, Ashley; grandson, Ethan Jackson and his wife, Cheyenne; grandson, Jonah Jackson and his wife, Brooke; granddaughter, Heather Jackson; his great grandchildren: Waylon Jackson, James Jackson, Summer Jackson, Emma Jackson, Elektra Jackson, Kemp Jackson, Wyatt Jackson, Annie Jackson, and Lane Jackson; his sister, Becky Jackson Bowen; and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
He is preceded in death by his son, Richard Keith Jackson; parents, George Lois Jackson and Keethra Baldwin Jackson; brother, William Winford Jackson; sister and brother-in-law, Mary Evelyn Thornton and Julius “Curly” Thornton; brother-in-law, Norman Bowen; and niece, Julene Thornton.
The family would like to thank the medical staff at Smith County Emergency Hospital in Raleigh and the medical staff at The University of Mississippi Medical Center Critical Care/Intensive Care Unit in Jackson.
