Bobbie Wigington Powell, 92, of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away at St. Vincent’s Hospital on Thursday, August 10, 2023. She was born to Lela Mae Wigington and Thomas Jeptha Wigington on August 24, 1930, in Mendenhall, Mississippi. She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Mattie Mae Wigginton, her brother, John Thomas Wigington, and her husband, Samuel (Jack) Powell, and her son-in-law, Robert (Bob) Murray.
Bobbie met the love of her life, Jack Powell, when he was sent to Mendenhall by the Illinois Central Railroad. After marrying, they spent many years moving from city to city with the railroad. Bobbie was blessed with many friendships in Mississippi, Illinois, Tennessee, and Kentucky as Jack rose in ranks of the ICG. Most important to Bobbie were her faith in God and the fellowship with others in the churches she and Jack were active in through the years. Her faith and unconditional love inspired her children, grandchildren, and many friends. Bobbie also enjoyed fishing, sewing, reading, and coloring in later years. In addition, she was an animal lover (with a special fondness for birds) and enjoyed the devotion of several special dogs throughout her life.
Bobbie is survived by her three children, Kathleen Murray, Ken Powell (Kristin), Kyle Powell (Annessia); her grandchildren, Robert (Rachel) Murray, Samuel (Brynn) Murray, Thomas Murray, Jack (Maddy) Powell, Melanie (Caleb) McLemore, Dottie Powell, Kathleen Powell, Sarah Powell; and great-grandsons, Colton Powell, and Wyatt Powell. She also loved her nieces, nephews, and her beloved childhood friends still living in Mendenhall.
There will be a visitation on September 1, 2023, at 7 PM at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Mendenhall, Mississippi. A small graveside service presided by Bobbie’s grandson, Army Chaplain Jack Powell,, will be held at 9 AM on September 2, 2023, at the Mendenhall Cemetery.
