Woodrow Hemby
February 6, 1935 – January 8, 2021
Woodrow Hemby passed peacefully to the Lord Friday evening at the age of 85 at St Dominic hospital. He was born February 6, 1935 to Doe and Beatrice Hemby in Magee, MS.
Gene grew up in Magee, was baptized at Corinth Church as a child and met his future wife, Lucille Walker. They married in November, a week before his Army service began. After returning from duty they lived in Jackson, MS and Gene became supervisor at Delta Millwork until its closing.
Gene was also affectionately known as “Brother” to his brother and sisters and “Woody” to friends. He enjoyed nature and the outdoors, gardening and grilling out on his patio. He loved his family and friends. Gene was a devoted father and compassionate husband taking care of “Cille” at home in her last 12 years as she suffered through Alzheimers. He survived a stroke in 2000 that left his speech and mobility impaired but his mind was sharp. Gene had an unforgettable warm, beautiful smile and strong handshake for all including the many grand-dogs that loved “Papaw” and found a welcoming spot by his feet.
Gene is survived by his daughters, Gail Fuller (Mike) and Angie Klein (Mark); Sisters, Ann Butler, Marilyn Morgan, Bobbie Jones (Willie), Tommie Sullivan (Charlie); Brother, Buck Barnes; Sister-in-law, Joann Carpenter (John); Grandchildren, Michael Fuller (Liz), Mitch Fuller, Nicholas Fuller, Danielle Leggett (Josh), Brian Planch; Great-grandchildren, Aili Leggett, Norah Leggett, Connor Fuller, Cooper Fuller.
He was preceded in death by his father, Woodrow W. “Doe” Hemby and mother, Beatrice Hall Barnes; Stepfather, Gus Barnes; his wife Lucille Walker Hemby; brothers-in law, Paul Noel, Richard Morgan, Bobby Butler and sister-in-law, Hazel Noel.
The family wishes to thank St Dominic’s 4North,Central Nephrology, and Hospice Ministries for their compassionate staff and support.
Visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, January 12, 2021, at Corinth Baptist Church, Magee, MS, from 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm with the service at 2:00 pm.
Interment will follow in Corinth Cemetery. Dr. Ronnie Falvey and Rev. Jay Wesbrooks will officiate the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations be made to Hospice Ministries or charity of choice.
