Dear Editor of MageeNews.com:

The 44th annual Building Safety Month will be celebrated internationally during the month of May to raise awareness about building safety. This celebration reinforces the need for the adoption of modern, regularly updated building codes, and helps individuals, families and businesses understand what it takes to create safe and sustainable structures. Everyone is encouraged to participate in the celebration and learn about the essential work of the City of Magee.

The 2024 Building Safety Month theme is “Mission Possible.”

Building Safety Month uses weekly themes to highlight how building safety issues impact each of us on a personal, local, and global level.

The City of Magee, a member of the International Code Council, is a Building Safety Month supporter and participant. The Board of Aldermen have adopted ICC 2021, which City officials use each day to ensure building safety.

According to City of Magee Zoning Director Penny Aguirre, “Our building codes help us protect the health, safety, and welfare of the residents of Magee, so we view them as very important.”

Local activities during Building Safety Month include raising awareness of building safety through our social media. Educational materials are available for schools and the community at large including brochures and lesson plans.

Among the hardworking members of the Code Council who created Building Safety Month are code officials, plan reviewers, fire inspectors, architects, builders, engineers, design professionals, contractors and others in the construction industry, including employees of the City of Magee, who work to ensure the safety of the buildings where we live, work and play. These professionals provide the first line of defense against building disasters; working vigilantly to ensure the safety of our communities.

City of Magee Fire Chief David Craft and Fire Marshall Charlie Valadie are responsible for International Fire Code 2021; City of Magee Building Inspector Kara Lucas is responsible for International Residential and Commercial Building Codes 2021; and City of Magee Director or Zoning Penny Aguirre is responsible for International Property Maintenance Code 2021. All city officials work together on code compliance and enforcement because they frequently overlap in their duties.
