In a matchup of district rivals, Simpson played host to Copiah Academy this past Friday night. The Cougars needed this win after dropping their 1st conference game the week before to the Lamar Raiders.

Coach Mangum and the Cougars set the tone early with an 8 play 63 yard touchdown drive (Hayes Berry 8 yard run) on the games 1st possession. Copiah would answer back with 14 consecutive points before the Cougars would score on a Barrett McKenney QB sneak to tie the game back up at 14 going into halftime.

After halftime, the Cougars asserted their will and outscored Copiah Academy 13-0 to go on to win their 5th game on the season and clinch a playoff berth, with the final score 27-13. Highlighted by an outstanding defensive performance in the 2nd half, the Cougars got another score from Barrett McKenney on a 47 yard TD run and another TD from Hayes Berry on a 3 yard TD to seal the game.

The Cougars will now go on the road in the regular season finale to Madden, Ms to take on the Leake Academy Rebels. Major playoff seeding implications are at stake, if the Cougars are able to secure the win, they should be in line for a 1st round bye for the 5A Playoffs in 2024.

Friday night’s game was the final home game of the season, and Simpson celebrated its seniors both at the game and at the pep rally earlier in the day.
