The National Weather Service in Jackson held a weather briefing on Monday, September 18, 2023, addressing the severe drought conditions in the region, as well as the increased risk of wildfires. Simpson County was included in the area of “elevated risk.”

Current conditions are expected to last at least through Tuesday. Open burning is discouraged, and residents should heed local burn bans. Other precautions to be taken include not allowing trailer chains to drag on roadways and disposing of cigarettes properly.

The weather briefing indicated that, while dry weather will continue through the week, there is a possibility of a cold front this weekend. Tropical activity was also addressed.

According to the National Weather Service, Simpson County is experiencing “extreme drought,” with some areas of the county having “exceptional drought.”

There is no rain in the forecast through Thursday, and warmer temperatures are expected through the end of the week.

Forecast show, however, that there is a possibility of a cold front with a chance of rain heading into the new week.

The 7-day precipitation forecast shows very little rainfall for our area.

The National Hurricane Center highlighted a couple of areas of activity, including Hurricane Nigel, which does not appear to be a threat to our state.
