Second Human Case of West Nile Virus Confirmed in Mississippi

The MSDH Public Health Laboratory has confirmed Mississippi’s second human case of West Nile virus (WNV), in a Rankin County resident. We’re now in peak season for West Nile infections, and mosquito protection is especially important – not only to prevent West Nile virus, but other serious mosquito-borne infections. While many healthy people can be infected with West Nile virus and experience no symptoms, WNV can cause flu-like symptoms, severe illness or death. Last year there were two WNV-related deaths in Mississippi.
Stay protected from all mosquito-borne illnesses by:
• Wearing long, light-colored clothing to cover the arms and legs.
• Using a mosquito repellent with an EPA-approved ingredient whenever you are outdoors, especially at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are more active.
• Repair window screens in your home, and eliminate any standing water around your house and yard. Even small amounts of water standing in
