Rain!

As I cut the grass last week, I wasn’t cutting much grass but mostly straggly weeds that seem to pop up no matter how dry the conditions! I ran over the yard and mowed down the weeds and chewed up lots of pine straw and leaves.   It was dusty and messy and I thought about how much better everyone would feel if we could get a really good, soaking rain.

The scriptures tell of many instances of the people suffering famine, drought, and hunger.

We are suffering a drought in our land that is as harmful as the drought of rain.

“Behold the days are coming,” declares the Lord God, “When I will send a famine on the land, Not a famine for bread or a thirst for water, But rather for hearing the words of the Lord. The people will stagger from sea to sea. And from north even to the east; They will go to and fro seek the word of the Lord, But they will not find it.” (Amos 8 11-12.)

I know how refreshing rain is to dry land, and the word of God is even more refreshing to a dry soul!!  Our churches are diminishing, and our people are drawn away from God’s word by “feel good” psycho-babble, activities instead of worship, and 3 minute-devotions instead of deep study of the scriptures. God’s word should pierce our hearts and convict us of our sins and failings. If we haven’t been convicted of a need to change or do something better in our life, maybe we have not been listening or studying as we should. We need soaking rains, not shallow sprinkles!

“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.   And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.”

(Hebrews 4:12-13)
