The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are reporting a rise in severe respiratory illness due to flu among young to middle-aged adults, sometimes resulting in hospitalization or death. This is an exception to the usual pattern of flu severity, which usually affects young children and older adults more severely. The H1N1 strain of flu, which has been responsible for severe illness in younger adults in past flu seasons, is responsible for this new rise in severe cases this year. Because most cases of severe respiratory illness are occurring in people who are unvaccinated, a flu shot is especially important for protection, particularly for Mississippians who may be traveling or receiving travelers from areas where flu incidence is higher. Adults who may be in poor health due to a chronic disease or other condition should also consider flu vaccination to help protect them from serious illness.
