Tis the Season to give thanks and look forward to a better tomorrow in and out of the classroom.
That’s exactly why a nonprofit that serves children in pre-k to middle school with literacy and food insecurity teamed up with a nonprofit that provides case management services and impactful community programming to low-income adults, seniors, children, and youth.
We’re talking about Katina’s Klassroom and Better Tomorrows. The two organizations joined forces to read to children this holiday season. Founder of Katina’s Klassroom, Katina Rankin, read to students at the Magee, MS apartment complex giving each child books afterward.
“The foundation’s mission is to improve reading skills and educational opportunities of pre-k to middle school children in underserved communities,” said Katina’s Klassroom Founder Katina Rankin.
“Holidays are a magical time of year, and reading during holidays is crucial for elementary and middle school students. Reading takes them on magical journeys, enhances vocabulary, and keeps little one’s minds active, ensuring they return to school with strong reading abilities and a positive learning mindset,” Rankin continued.
Better Tomorrows’ Senior Associate Director and Resident Liaison Bridgett Floyd Lee agrees.
“We’re thankful for the partnership.
Our staff have offices located within affordable housing developments like Raleigh Annex allowing for direct access to the populations we serve.
Our proximity means that our staff is better able to provide convenient and outcome-driven programming like reading to the children,” said Better Tomorrows’ Senior Associate Director Bridgett Floyd Lee.
In addition to the book giveaway, Katina’s Klassroom also sent the children home with boxes of canned goods for Thanksgiving. The boxes were packed with corn, green beans, pasta, tomato sauce, snacks and much more.
“By creating techniques for getting a child engaged in reading beyond the classroom and during the holidays plus tackling food insecurity which is directly tied to a child’s learning – Katina’s Klassroom focuses on nourishment for the mind, body, and soul. We’re grateful to be able to serve,” said Rankin.
“Better Tomorrows remains committed to providing affordable housing residents with the resources to facilitate strong communities, healthy lifestyles, economic stability, and educational success,” said Lee.
“I think once we all realize our communities are just one big classroom and we are better together, then we can be thankful not just during the holidays but every day and look forward to better tomorrows,” said Rankin.
