Mountain Tops!!!

I love the mountains!! If I have a choice of cities, beaches, or mountains, I will always choose the mountains. The first time we drove to the Rocky Mountains, I was awestruck. We drove thru New Mexico for several hours, seeing miles of rich farm land change over to open grazing land, and as we drove over a small hill, there in the distance, the snow covered mountains!!! The contrast in the landscape was startling!

When you are in the mountains, you see awe-inspiring views. From the valleys and lower altitudes, things appear large and intimidating, limiting our view and our perspective. From the mountain top, you can clearly see the beauty of the world below, those intimidating things look small and insignificant.

Did you know that Jesus enjoyed getting away for a mountain retreat? The Bible tells us in Mark 9:2-3, that one day Jesus took Peter, James and John high up into the mountains so that they could be alone. While on the mountain top, Jesus’ appearance changed. His clothes became a dazzling white, whiter than any bleach could get them. Then Elijah and Moses appeared and began talking to Jesus. Peter was so thrilled that he wanted to build a shelter and stay!!! Jesus knew that the purpose of their experience on the mountain top was not to stay on the mountain, but to renew their strength for the difficult days that were ahead of them down in the valley. He knew the valleys were waiting!

Just as we can’t stay on the mountain tops, we also can’t dwell in the valleys!! Life is fleeting, and ever changing. We should stay focused on the long-term, personal relationship with the Lord, and He will always guide us through both the mountains and the valleys!! Cling to the things that never change!

Isaiah 54:10 – “For the mountains shall depart and the hills be removed, but My kindness shall not depart from you, Nor shall My covenant of peace be removed,” Says the Lord, who has mercy on you.

Psalm 91: 15-16 “When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them. I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation.”
