Mississippi College placed 12 student-athletes on the 2017 Gulf South Conference FireSeeds All-Academic Teams, it was announced on Tuesday (June 13).

Academic All-GSC Teams are selected by the GSC Sports Information Directors (SIDs) and Faculty Athletic Representatives (FARs) in a joint vote. Nominees must have an over grade-point-average (GPA) of 3.20 or better on a 4.00 scale for their entire academic career and may not be freshmen or first-semester or quarter transfers. The student-athlete must be a significant contributor to the squad. Other factors include leadership, community service and extra-curricular activities. SIDs and FARs are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes. The number of student-athletes selected in each sport is determined by the number of positions normally involved in the playing of that sport. Ties are not broken.

Women’s track & field (Kaleigh AkersAnna Grace GoveroKiana Grant and Andrea McDonald) led the way for MC with four selections, while men’s track & field (Luke HodnettRobert McMahon and Will Young) had three honorees. Baseball (Blaine Crim and Kyle Smith) and men’s tennis (Lucio Menezes and Joan Valy) had two selections, while softball (Katherine Lee) rounded out the honorees.

The Choctaws and Lady Choctaws had 79 student-athletes named to the GSC Spring Academic Honor Roll, giving them 191 total recognized during the 2016-17 academic year. Qualification for the Honor Roll is automatic based on at least a 3.00 grade-point average and does not require a voting process.

Overall, there were 794 student-athletes who earned this distinction, the most in conference history for the spring season.

Mississippi College is a private Christian university located in Clinton, Mississippi with an enrollment of over 5,000 students. MC is recently finished their transition process back to NCAA Division II and the Gulf South Conference and will be competing for conference and national championships in the 2016-17 academic year.
