As Tropical Storm Arthur moves closer to south and central Mississippi, the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) encourages the public to stay weather aware and prepare for impacts to roadways. Starting late tonight and lasting into Friday, Tropical Storm Arthur will likely bring several inches of rain to portions of the state, which can result in flash flooding. MDOT advises motorists to avoid traveling in severe weather, and importantly, never attempt to drive through a flooded roadway. MDOT will inform the public of any impacts to Mississippi highways through the MDOT Traffic app, MDOTtraffic.com and @MississippiDOT on Facebook and X.
Flooding is a top weather-related killer. Most flood deaths occur at night when people become trapped in a stalled vehicle in a flooded area. Following these safety measures can help ensure your family’s safety on flooded roadways.
- Avoid already flooded areas. A flowing stream can carry a vehicle downstream.
- Never drive through a flooded area. Always remember to TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN!
- Do not use cruise control when the roads are wet. The distance it takes to stop increases in these conditions.
- Use your headlights whenever conditions require the use of windshield wipers.
- If you are driving at night, be especially cautious as it is harder to recognize flood conditions.
- Never drive around a barricaded road.
- If your vehicle stalls, abandon it immediately and seek higher ground. Rising water can engulf a vehicle and its occupants.
MDOT is currently monitoring the storm, and crews stand ready to respond to potential impacts on roads and bridges.
