JACKSON, MISS. – ‘Tis the season for holiday travel!  In 2025, AAA projects a record 122.4 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home during the holidays. This forecast is a 2.2% increase over 2024, breaking the previous record of 119.7 million travelers.  The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) wants to keep your spirits merry and bright by limiting traffic delays due to highway construction and by offering a few holiday travel tips.

To provide maximum travel capacity and minimal construction delays throughout the holiday season, MDOT crews and contractors will halt all non-emergent lane closures from Wednesday, Dec. 24 through Thursday, Jan. 1.

“Even though highway construction across the state will be suspended, motorists should be aware that some lane closures will remain in place,” said MDOT Executive Director Brad White. “These lane closures are to protect the traveling public, and MDOT wants motorists to treat these like active work zones, even with the absence of workers. Please slow down in these work zones.”

No matter how far you roam, safety should be your top priority. MDOT offers these tips for safe driving this holiday season:

“With increased traffic around Christmas and New Year’s, driving smart is crucial in ensuring a safe and enjoyable holiday for all Mississippians,” said White. “Do your part by obeying the speed limit, buckling up and not driving distracted or impaired. We want everyone to get home for the holidays safely.”
