Mississippi College senior wide receiverMarcel Newson has been named the Gulf South Conference Special Teams Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday (Oct. 17).

Newson (Coldwater, Miss.) becomes the first Choctaw to take home the conference-wide honor since Donnie Ashley was named the GSC Offensive Player of the Week 22 years ago to the day following a 20-12 win over Samford.

The Northwest MS CC transfer returned after missing the West Florida game due to injury and had four punt returns for 93 yards, including a 73-yard sprint with seven minutes left in the fourth quarter to give MC a 41-35 advantage over #17 Valdosta State.

Newson also caught seven passes for 114 yards and a 21-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter to tie the game 35-35. On the season, Marcel is leading the league in all-purpose yards (173.8 ypg) and ranks second in receiving yards (108.0 ypg) per game.

The Choctaws will be back in action this Saturday when they travel to Carrollton, Ga. to face the University of West Georgia at 1:00 p.m. (CT).
