Love from a Pure Heart
In our latest Sunday school lesson, Peter is talking to Christians that are being persecuted and are suffering for their faith. He talked to them about being Holy, because God is Holy! They are to show their faith, in spite of their suffering, by showing their “love for one another earnestly from a pure heart”. As I thought of an appropriate example of that love, my mind carried me back over 40 years ago.
Daddy was in the hospital at Magee and was dying from a malignant brain tumor. As the days passed, he progressively worsened and all of our family stayed and kept a vigil. The day came when Dr. Wade said the time was eminent. When the time came for the midnight shift nurses and nurses’ aides to end their shift and go home, these precious ladies that had cared for him so wonderfully for weeks came to his room as their shift ended and stayed with him until the end. These sweet ladies had been up all night caring for others and when it came time to go home and rest, they continued caring for my daddy!
That is a testimony of loving one another earnestly from a pure heart. That simple act of love is still remembered today by my family and others who sat with us. We don’t need degrees in theology, jobs with impressive titles, or a 5- step program to show our faith! Jesus’ example of love on the cross is shown daily in the actions we take with each other.
Mark 12:29-31
“The most important one”, answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater that these.”
