Lois Walker Matthews
Lois Walker Matthews, retired teacher, of Huntsville, AL died on May 2, 2023 . She was 80.
Lois was born on April 26, 1943 and was raised on a farm in Magee, MS. A 1962 graduate of Magee High School, she went on to The University of Southern Mississippi and received her bachelor’s degree in 1966 and her master’s degree in 1968. She loved music and was the pianist at Corinth Baptist Church of Magee for some time and began a career in education that would span nearly 40 years in Mississippi and Alabama.
She married Walter Matthews of Magee, MS in 1971 and moved to Huntsville, AL where she continued teaching and raised a family. She was active in church, loved coming home to Magee, and was a Proverbs 31 woman. In the late 1990s, she continued her education by receiving the AA certificate in education and later retired from teaching in 2007.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George Ellis Walker and Lorea Burnham Walker of Magee, MS and her stepmother, Jessie Halle Walker of Magee, MS. She is also preceded in death by her late husband, Walter Matthews, and her brother, W.A. Walker of Magee, MS.
She is survived by two children, Kenneth Matthews (Jennifer) of Huntsville, AL and Judy Bush (Kevin) of Harvest, AL and five grandchildren – Laurel Matthews, Michael Matthews, John David Bush, Katherine Lois Bush, and Daniel Bush. She is also survived by two nephews – John Walker of Magee, MS and Roger Walker of Jackson, MS and several step siblings.
Visitation will be at First Baptist Church of Huntsville, AL on Monday, May 15, 2023 from 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM with the funeral starting at 12:00 PM that day. Burial will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery in Huntsville, AL. Rev. Mark Seanor will be officiating. Berryhill Funeral Home of Huntsville, AL is in charge of arrangements.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Gentiva Hospice for their assistance and support during the last few months of her life.
