A petition of signatures for the allowance of liquor sales within the county was presented to the Simpson County Board of Supervisors, Friday, September 6, 2019.
The signatures received were verified by the Circuit Clerks office as registered voters. 1518 verified signatures were presented to the board for action to be added to the election ballot November 5, 2019.
MS Code states that if signatures are presented it is the duty of the supervisors to call an election to be determined by the voters whether or not the sale, distribution and possession of liquor shall be permitted within the county.
MS Code 67-1-11(2) states: “Upon presentation and filing of a proper petition requesting same signed by at least twenty percent (20%) or fifteen hundred (1,500), whichever number is the lesser, of the qualified electors of the county, it shall be the duty of the board of supervisors to call an election at which there shall be submitted to the qualified electors of the county the question of whether or not the sale, distribution and possession of alcoholic liquors shall be permitted in the county.”
It also says, “Such election shall be held and conducted by the county election commissioners on a date fixed by the order of the board of supervisors, which date shall not be more than sixty (60) days from the date of the filing of said petition.”
All information was provided to Donna Magee, Election Commissioner, for petition to be added to the November 5, 2019 ballot.
The registered voters of Simpson County will cast votes to decide if liquor sales will be allowed in the county. The majority vote will be the deciding decision on the outcome.
