James Richard “Ricky” McKissack, Sr.
(December 20, 1957 – January 12, 2025)
James Richard McKissack, Sr., lovingly known as “Coach,” passed away on January 12, 2025, at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. Born on December 20, 1957, Ricky was a longtime resident of Mize, Mississippi, whose life was marked by love, mentorship, and a steadfast devotion to family and community.
Ricky spent many years in Moselle, Mississippi, where he coached football and baseball for Moselle Elementary School. His players affectionately called him “Coach,” a title that reflected his dedication to guiding and inspiring young athletes. His leadership and encouragement left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A passionate outdoorsman, Ricky loved hunting and took pride in raising and training beagles. Some of his fondest memories were made on hunting trips with his brothers and family. He also enjoyed spirited games of dominoes and the warmth of time spent with loved ones.
For years, Ricky worked at Ellisville State School in Ellisville, Mississippi, where he cared deeply for the residents he served. His kindness and generosity extended beyond his professional role, as he often took residents on special outings and shared in their joys. It was during this time that he met the love of his life and soulmate, Mary Gavin McKissack.
Ricky and Mary shared a bond that remained steadfast through adversity. In 2011, Ricky was diagnosed with cancer, but through the unwavering love and support of his wife and family, and the grace of Almighty God, he overcame the illness. Mary remained a constant source of strength and encouragement as Ricky navigated the challenges of recovery.
Ricky was preceded in death by his parents, Milton Eugene McKissack and Willie Mae Kinkade McKissack, as well as his brothers, Rodney Kinkade McKissack and Charles Thomas McKissack and sister Tommie Jean Sullivan.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 17 years, Mary Gavin McKissack; his sons, James (Jessica) McKissack, Jr. of Moselle, MS; Clint (Kristen) McKissack of Knoxville, TN; and Gavin (Joyce) Davis of Lucedale, MS; his daughter, Bridgett Webb of Laurel, MS; his twelve grandchildren; his brothers, Milton Eugene McKissack of Soso, MS; Chris (Lisa) McKissack of Mize, MS; Terry (Cindy) McKissack of Seminary, MS; and Joe (Jane) McKissack of Mize, MS; and many extended family members and friends who will cherish his memory.
Pallbearers will be Eric McKissack, Neil McKissack, Paul Lowery, Blake McKissack, Trey McKissack, and Jude Webb.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Todd McKissack.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 19, 2025, from 2:00p.m. to 3:00p.m. at Mize First Baptist Church, with the service beginning at 3:00pm.
