HYDE-SMITH ISSUES VETERANS DAY STATEMENT

Encourages Mississippians to Become More Engaged with Veterans

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.), who is scheduled to mark Veterans Day at a ceremony in Ridgeland, today issued a statement in advance of the national holiday to encourage Mississippians to become more engaged with veterans.

“Each Veterans Day, our nation comes together to remember, honor, and thank the brave men and women who have fought selflessly to defend our homeland and its values,” Hyde-Smith said.  “They are, without a doubt, our nation’s heroes.  These heroes may be our parents, our siblings, our friends, or our children.  They are among us every day, engrained into our communities.  It is our duty, as a people, to acknowledge their service and sacrifices.”

Hyde-Smith called attention to the National Warrior Call Day Resolution (S.Res.754), which encourages Americans to actively reach out to servicemembers, veterans, and first responders to strengthen social connections that can promote mental health and wellbeing.  National Warrior Call Day is the Sunday after Veterans Day.

“Veterans Day is an opportunity to not only honor veterans, but to recommit ourselves to help and support them year round,” Hyde-Smith said.  “There are many ways we can support them.  Aiding reintegration into civilian life.  Supporting veterans as they navigate the resources allocated to them.  And the simplest, but perhaps most important, encouraging open and honest communication.”

“Just one phone call can reduce isolation, and it may be exactly what that person needs to get the help they need to uncover those invisible wounds and seek resources for help,” she said.

Hyde-Smith also invited Mississippi veterans with problems accessing U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs resources and assistance to contact her for assistance.
