Huguette Marguerite Gestas Buford
(“Memommy”)
October 31, 2025
Huguette Buford (born Huguette Marguerite Gestas), lovingly known as “Memommy” to the many who adored her, passed away peacefully on October 31, 2025, in the presence of her family at Arrington Living Center in Collins, Mississippi.
Born in France, Huguette was a post- war bride. Her beloved husband, Albert Murchison Buford, a native of Tennessee, often told the story of how he first saw her stepping off a bus and declared, “That’s the girl I’m going to marry!” His friend, astonished, replied, “You are certainly not—that’s my sister!” But true love prevailed, and Albert and Huguette were soon married.
Their first daughter, Anne, was born while they were still living in France. Huguette and little Anne later journeyed through Ellis Island, and Huguette proudly became a United States citizen. Once settled in the states, the couple welcomed three more daughters: Janine, Alisa, and Mary Lou. Albert affectionately referred to his daughters as “numbers one, two, three, and four,” while Huguette often called them her “big girls” and “little girls.”
Huguette was fiercely proud to be an American, yet she remained deeply connected to her French roots. Her delightful French accent, sense of humor, and spirited nature were an unforgettable part of who she was.
A true lover of beauty and fashion, Huguette had an impeccable eye for style. When her daughters were young, she lovingly sewed all of their clothes. She was, without a doubt, a diva at heart—fond of pretty clothes, purses, shoes, and all things fashionable.
Huguette’s legacy is one of love, strength, humor, and elegance. She will be remembered for her laughter, her flair, and the warmth she shared with everyone she met.
Huguette is lovingly remembered by her family, including her daughter Anne and son-in-law Butch Russum, her daughter Alisa Taylor and son-in-law Donnie Taylor, and her daughter Mary Lou Buford-Gestas and son-in-law Samuel (Joey) Harris. She also leaves behind her many cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought her endless joy. Huguette is survived by her brothers Jean-Claude Gestas and his wife Leslie, Yvon Gestas and his wife Luang and her sister Janine Gestas.
She is preceded in death by her husband Albert Buford, her daughter Janine Earney, and son-in-law Jay Earney.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the caring staff of Arrington Living Center where Memommy was a resident and an active member of their choir. The love and kindness they showed to Memommy will never be forgotten.. Her ashes will be interred later in Huntsville, Alabama, next to her beloved daughter, Janine.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in memory of Huguette.
