Each year on January 9, communities across the United States pause to recognize the men and women who work every day to keep our neighborhoods safe. National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day is a time to express gratitude for the dedication, courage, and service of law enforcement officers nationwide.

Why Was National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day Created?

National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day was established in 2015 by Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.), in partnership with other law enforcement organizations. It emerged during a period when public trust in law enforcement was being challenged. The goal was simple but meaningful: to remind officers that their efforts are seen, valued, and appreciated.

Every day, law enforcement officers put on the uniform without knowing what the shift may bring. They respond to emergencies, protect the vulnerable, and face difficult situations most people never encounter. Despite this, a sincere “thank you” is something they don’t always hear.

This annual observance serves as a reminder to recognize the people behind the badge and acknowledge their commitment to serving others.

How Can You Thank a Police Officer?

There are many thoughtful and easy ways to show appreciation on National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day:

  • Drop off snacks or coffee at your local police department (check ahead for preferred times and guidelines).

  • Encourage children to create thank-you cards, drawings, or signs.

  • Organize a blue-themed event with a school, church, or neighborhood group.

  • Start a blue ribbon campaign or decorate a public space in honor of law enforcement.

  • Donate to organizations that support law enforcement families, including those of fallen officers.

  • Support or join a Neighborhood Watch, an ongoing way to promote community safety.

A small gesture can make a big difference.

On January 9—and throughout the year—taking time to say “thank you” helps remind law enforcement officers that their service matters.
