Every year a ceremony (Heroes Behind The Badge) is held in Mendenhall in remembrance of members of law enforcement who died in the line of duty.  I have attended these ceremonies for several years, and they never get easy.  Watching family members honor and praise their love ones is touching and sometimes heart retching.

Nine men were recognized…and no one wants to see the list grow.

Sheriff Eugene Dickson Hubbard—Friday,

January 21, 1910

Deputy Sheriff Earl Nunnery—Monday,

January 30, 1928

Deputy Marshall Willis Washington Hemby

Monday, January 30, 1928

Constable Willis Bernice Herrington—Friday,

April 13, 1951

Constable Wilson Charles Buffington—-Thursday,

June 16, 1960

Deputy Sheriff William M. Grubbs—Monday

July 14, 1986

Deputy Sheriff James Boykin Barnett—Tuesday,

June 26, 1990

Sheriff Lloyd Silas Jones—Wednesday,

October 4, 1995

Sheriff E. C. Mullins—Tuesday,

March 20, 2001

Brother Rodney Anderson gave the opening prayer.  LeQuieta Walker sang the National Anthem.  Mrs. Walker’s voice resounded up and down the streets of Mendenhall.  Jeff Sullivan led in the Pledge of Allegiance.  Ross Walton played taps.  Courtney James did an awesome job on the song she sang.  Sheriff Paul Mullins read the heroes names and closed the ceremony.

Due to COVID-19 the ceremony was modified from precious years, but the event was well attended.

Thank you to the Sheriff’s department for the time and work to make this such a nice time of remembrance.
