Daniel C. Jones, District Attorney, announces the guilty plea of Defendant John Mathis for Aggravated Assault.
Raleigh- District Attorney Daniel C. Jones announced that on Thursday, May 21, 2015, defendant John Mathis, age 50, from Mize, MS, pled guilty to Aggravated Assault before the Hon. Eddie H. Bowen, Judge for the Circuit Court of Smith County, Mississippi.
Mathis, the former chief of police for Mize, was arrested after he and others attacked the victim at his home in Smith County.
Judge Bowen sentenced the Defendant John Mathis to eight (8) years in the custody of MDOC, with eight (8) years suspended with five (5) years supervised probation and three (3) years unsupervised probation, with the Defendant Mathis paying $1,000.00 to the Mississippi Crime Victim’s Compensation Fund, and court costs of $451.50. The victim of the crime agreed to this sentence.
District Attorney Jones stated that “no one is above the law, not even former law enforcement officers. We must all respect the rule of law; otherwise, our society would be in complete chaos.” District Attorney Jones went on to say that his office “prosecutes criminals without passion, prejudice, improper influence, political standing, financial standing, or regards to race” and it is his duty to “ensure that justice will be served with each and every case [his] office handles.”
Daniel C. Jones represents the 13th Circuit Court District which includes Covington, Jasper, Simpson, and Smith counties.
