Gas Tanker Truck Fire

On August 28, 2004 at 14:45:46 Magee Fire Department was dispatched to 49 Northbound with the report of a 18 wheeler tanker truck that was on fire. The tanker was hauling 7,300 gallons regular gas & 1,200 gallons of Premium gas. Driver explained that he herd a loud boom and as he looked out his rear mirror, he could see that the rear tires of the tanker trailer was on fire. He immediately exited off the highway and dialed 911. Magee PD & Simpson County SO had traffic in both North & Southbound lanes shut down. Upon arrival, there was no odor of gas which led me to believe, the fuel tank itself had not ruptured yet. It was the rear wheels & axles that were on fire. I commanded my guys to stay back as I took the front jump line from E1 and slowly approached the trailer. I quickly knocked down the fire and saved the tank from rupturing. Firefighter John Ready, took the fire hose to relieve me and continued to spray water on the tanker cooling it down. Scene was under control at 15:19:26.

Mendenhall Fire Department was also present on the scene.
