Dr. Dewayne Middleton, President of Copiah Lincoln Community College, and Vice President Dr. Anika Floyd, of the Simpson Campus, met before the Board of Supervisors to update the board on happenings at Co-Lin. Co-Lin was named a “Great College to Work For” for the sixth time! Co-Lin was named the #1 community college in Mississippi. The 2023 girls softball team won the National World Series title championship. Workforce is in full swing with many opportunities for classes.
Supervisor Danny Craft District 2, was awarded a certificate for being a graduate of the MAS Institute for Excellence in County Government. This program to achieve excellence was created in 2019 by the MAS, a voluntary education program for county supervisors. To complete the program, supervisors must complete 10 core courses and 30 elective courses, for a minimum 40 credits (CEUs). Supervisor Randy Moore District 5 presented Craft with the award. Per Moore there are 410 supervisors in the State of MS and only 130 graduated this program. Danny Craft was the only Supervisor from Simpson County to graduate.
Buddy Wolverton, County Engineer, reported the status of State-Aid & LSSBP as of June 30, 2023
- SAP-64(64)– Grade, drain, base and surface for Star to Braxton. 40% completions with 55% Elapsed time. Contractor has installed all cross drains and has started earthwork operations.
- LSBP-64(24)– Bridge Replacement Shorter Road – 90% Complete. 85% Elapsed time. Contractor has completed box bridge, approaches, and seeded site. Awaiting growth of grass before requesting final inspection.
- SAP-64(65)– (Bridge Replacement) Dry Creek Road – Will rebid.
- LSBP-64(25) – Bridge Replacement Peacock Road – Office Review Plans were mailed to State Aid on July 25, 2022. Mailed out utility agreements, can start right of way acquisition.
- ERBR-64(03) – Bridge Replacement Saratoga- Sharon Road – 12% completed and 10% Elapsed time. Contractor has driven test piles. and is driving permanent piling.
- ERBR – 64(04) – Bridge Rehabilitation Harrisville – Braxton Road – 90% Complete 70% Elapse time. Contractor completed bridge and approaches.
- 2022 Simpson County Resurfacing Project – Roads 1A-5O – 74% Completed and 103% Elapsed time. Contractor has completed chip sealing on 59 of the 94 roads.
- SAP-64(17) M – (Guardrails) Old River Road – P.S.& E. Assembly mailed to State Aid January 3, 2023.
The Sheriff’s department submitted the food service invoice for June for the board’s approval. The board approved hiring Doug Patrick for the fail part-time non certified and Michelle Cockrell as a new hire for full -time non certified dispatch. Approval was granted for Angie Waker and Skyla Morrow to attend Negotiations and Talk Tactics July 24-25 from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. in Mendenhall at a cost of $300.00 each.
Ben Warren presented the Road manger’s report. Warren advised crews have been working overtime cleaning storm debris over the past few weeks.
A school bus turnaround for Markus McCoy was approved.
The board approved for Doug Patrick to travel to Oregon, Missouri to transport an inmate to Simpson County Adult Detention Center.
Randall Coleman was approved to attend a constable training in Gulfport, MS on July 24, 2023. The board approved for Tina Everett and John Killpatrick to attend a 911 training at Orange Beach $300 plus 3 nights accommodations.
