Mississippi’s Coalition for Citizens with Disabilities is preparing to celebrate another year with friends and honorees at a Torchbearers Celebration, December 1, 2016.  The Coalition will host a ticketed event at the Arts Center of Mississippi, 201 East Pascagoula Street, in Jackson.  The evening will feature hors’ d’oeuvres and beverages, the “Keep Building Jackson” Lego exhibit built by Scott Crawford, the VSA Mississippi annual exhibit, and music by gifted guitarist Barry Leach.  Tickets are $40 per person and support the Coalition’s work as a statewide cross-disability advocacy and service organization.

The Coalition’s event will celebrate the joint accomplishments of the Coalition and other organizations, and will recognize notable advocates and friends.  A short program will take place about 6:00.  This year’s list of honorees includes parent Nicole Nichols of Richland; parent Michaela Thompson and Deputy Brandi DeMoll of McComb; Susan Buttross, M.D., from University of Mississippi Medical Center; and wheelchair sports organizer Antonio Wright of Jackson.

“There are so many organizations and individuals who work diligently and generously with and for Mississippians with disabilities.  We have chosen a few to honor this year,” said Pam Dollar, executive director of the Coalition.  “We are also very mindful of how many people are working throughout our state to improve life for people with disabilities and, really, for all Mississippians.”

Tickets can be purchased on-line at www.msccd.org, or at the door.  Tickets can also be purchased and donated back to the Coalition.  “Anyone who enjoys great food and wonderful music and art, can feel good about joining us to support our worthy cause and to recognize some outstanding Mississippians,” said Dollar.

The Coalition, founded in 1989, is a nonprofit state-wide cross-disability organization comprised of people with disabilities, family members, professionals and advocates.  The Coalition works collaboratively to expand opportunities and enhance the quality of life for Mississippians with disabilities and empower them to reach their full potential in all aspects of their lives.  The Coalition’s mantra is, “Opening Doors Together.”  For more information call 601-969-0601.
