Simpson County Board of Supervisors met Monday, October 5, 2020 for their regular scheduled meeting.
Dr. Jane Hulon-Sims, President of Copiah Lincoln Community College, along with administrators and board members met before the board to give their annual report of the college. Sims advised Covid-19 had been challenging, but the staff was adjusting well. The Spring semester finished online. Summer courses were all completed online as well. A little normalcy has return with the beginning of football season. Employees have adjusted to zoom meeting and doing their best to keep safe. Wesson Campus welcome students back to the dorms and classrooms.
Simpson campus has added new classrooms and programs. Wesson campus developed new tennis courts, parking lots, new scoreboard, presidents home and many other improvements to campus appearance.
Dr. Sims is not happy with enrollment numbers from Simpson County students. They are asking for help to keep our students within district and attend Co-Lin. Co-Lin held their tuition low and a great savings can be encountered by attending Copiah Lincoln Community College.

Sheriff Paul Mullins advised the board he had 11 inmates that were trouble and was returning them to MDOC and in return 16 new inmates will be delivered. There are enough inmates at present time to keep the garbage trucks running and the new inmates should be arriving soon.
- The board approved for dispatchers Angie Walker and Crystal Scarbourough to attend BETST (Vicarious Trauma) at Pearl, MS on October 8, 2020 at a cost of $150.00, and to attend BETST (Hearing & Speech Impaired) course at Pearl on October 22, 2020 at a cost of $150.00 each.
- Board approved for dispatcher Tiffany Rutland to attend 40 hour Basic Certification Course at Pearl, MS, October 12-16 at a cost of $395.00.
- The Board approved to hire Minda Smith for as a dispatch full time certified position.
County Engineer Buddy Woolverton presented the following State Aid & LSBP Projects as of September 30, 2020.
LSBP-64(22) – Jake Barnes Road (Bridge)
- Final inspection was held on September 22, 2020. Contractor has been given punchlist.
SAP-64(16)M-(Surface Maintenance) Cato Road
- 27.41% Complete
- 15.00% Elapsed Time
- Contractor has completed base repair and leveling. Will reseal next year.
SAP-64(19)S – (Surface Maintenance) Mt. Zion to Shivers Rd & St. Johns Road.
- 36.72% Complete
- 21.82% Elapsed Time
- Contractor has completed base repairs and leveling. Will reseal next year.
LSBP-64(23_ – (Bridge Replacement) Sofa Road
- Working on P.S. & E. Assembly, Have mail out agreements
- Can start acquiring right of way
SAP-64(64) – (Grade, Drain, Base & Surface) Star-Braxton Road
- P.S. & E. Inspection held on August 19, 2020. Can start acquiring right of way.
A discussion took place on the Federal Bridge Inspections that have taken place over the past few weeks. After all inspections a total of 6 Bridges were closed. New Hope, Big V, Tom Berry Road, Shorter Road, Robert Russell Road and Harrisville-Braxton Road. The Harrisville-Braxton Road was able to make needed adjustments immediately so the bridge did not have to shut down. At time of board meeting piling had been repaired on New Hope and Big V. Crews were on hand working on Tom Berry and plans were to be finished quickly. All bridges should be addressed by end of week weather permitting.
Supervisors discussed school bus turnarounds for the county. The board would like the list of turnarounds to work on during summer months. The School district does not know what students will be returning to school or enrolling until after school starts. The turnarounds can only be submitted after August.
