Charles “Charlie” Earvin Adcox, 71 of Mendenhall, Mississippi passed away Sunday, June 9, 2024 at his residence in Mendenhall, Mississippi. He was born Saturday, September 27, 1952 in Taylorsville, Mississippi.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 13, 2024 from 5:00pm until 8:00pm at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home, 302 Eight Ave SW, Magee, Mississippi. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 14, 2024 at 2:00pm at Kennedy Springs Baptist Church, 2021 MS-540, Magee, Mississippi. A Private Family Graveside will follow in Zion Hill Cemetery in Mize, Mississippi. Bro. Wade Mathis and Kylie Warren will officiate. Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Magee is in charge of arrangements. 601-849-5031
God made a farmer on September 27, 1952. God gained that farmer back home on June 9, 2024.
There wasn’t a watermelon that could be grown that Charlie Adcox couldn’t get sold. It was a passion instilled in him as a young boy by his father and grandfather that he never outgrew. It was his life. He loved every aspect of the process. From preparing the land, growing the plants, the harvest, and especially the selling. He sold melons covering the entire state of Mississippi. He bought, sold, and shipped melons throughout all of the southern United States…. Daddy loaded watermelons even in his sleep. Many nights his grandkids would hear him calling out numbers for orders and counts of melons. It was always on his mind. He loved it. It was not a job to him, it was his life.
There were two places that daddy loved to be. Home and the Market. It always gave him great joy when his two worlds combined and he had us all in the same place together. There were fifth generation Adcox’s working at the market and he loved that. Family and all of us being together made him very happy. It didn’t have to be an occasion to him, he just wanted everybody there.
To work the land, to feel the dirt, enjoying the sun, and when the work day is done, to sit and admire all of it, He believed in hard work. He was one of the very few that truly enjoyed it. You worked til you were weary and worn. Daddy‘s body was weary and worn. He is worn no more. The work that he loved provided a wonderful life for his family, and we are truly thankful. Someone lovingly said, “Charlie was that last of the watermelon Mohicans.” A true legend in the field of agriculture and produce. Daddy loved the song by Craig Campbell, The outskirts of Heaven. That’s where he said he hoped he could live when he got there… We believe he got that wish on Sunday, June 9th. He is now breathing freely, walking those fields of Heaven.
He was preceded in death by his father, Earvin Rudolph Adcox; mother, Katie Mearle Gregory Adcox.
Survivors include his loving wife, Brenda Jo Sullivan Adcox; daughter, Jennifer Adcox son, Brandon Adcox (Casey); daughter, Ashley Adcox Green (Ty); grandchildren, McKenzie Rice, Natalie Rice, Avery Rice, Kadin Adcox, Addie Grace Barnard, Collier Adcox, Jack Green, Ava Green and Baby Green (coming soon); great grandchild, Kruze Maddox; brother, Jimmie Adcox (Marylou); sister, Kay Morgan (Jeff); and a host of nieces, nephews, other family, and friends.
Pallbearers will be Neal Cole, Sam Austin, Ty Austin, Jeffrey Taylor, Rodney Haynes, David Barnett, John Michael Sullivan, and Nick Sullivan.
Special music will be performed by Gloria Barnes and Christy Berry.
