Looking for ways to help senior scam victims
recoup their money
Last week, I joined 44 state and territory attorneys general in signing a bipartisan letter urging Congress to include Edith’s Bill in any COVID-19 relief legislation. As the pandemic persists, seniors across the country have fallen victim to scams, such as those that ask for personal information in exchange for phony tests and cures for COVID-19. The legislation would help senior victims recover financial losses incurred as a result of fraud.
As Mississippi’s chief legal officer, I am committed to protecting our seniors who are especially vulnerable to fraud and abuse, fighting to safeguard the retirement savings they worked a lifetime to build. Edith’s Bill is an important step to providing victims with the financial relief they deserve.

Protecting Mississippi’s Small Businesses
My office has filed a lawsuit against Centurion Filing Services, LLC, dba Mississippi Certificate Service, for allegedly deceptive solicitations targeting new Mississippi businesses. This action follows a cease-and-desist letter to Centurion that we sent them on June 16, 2020, to which the company has not responded.
Con artists, like Centurion, are making themselves out to be official state agencies in an attempt to exploit vulnerable business owners in our state. This lawsuit was filed to stop Centurion’s fraudulent practices and to protect Mississippi’s small business owners.
If you have received one of these solicitations in the mail, please contact my office. You can read about my lawsuit, which includes a copy of one of the letters here.
New Support for First Responders
Our public safety officers risk their lives every day to keep us safe, especially now as states continue to battle COVID-19. Earlier this year, I signed a letter sent by the National Association of Attorneys General to encourage swift action by Congress to help those who contract COVID-19 as a result of their service.
The Safeguarding America’s First Responders (SAFR) Act, which President Trump signed into law last week, extends federal disability and death benefits for first responders and their families to include COVID-19. This is similar to action my office took to extend the Mississippi Law Enforcement Officer and Fire Fighter Disability benefits to our first responders who contract COVID-19.
You can read more about that action here.
‘On the Stump’ with Y’all Politics
With Neshoba County Fair cancelled, Y’all Politics stepped in to provide a virtual substitute. I was pleased to have that opportunity to share all the great new initiatives we’ve taken at the Attorney General’s Office this year. Not only are we Mississippi’s premier law firm, we’re also a real public service entity. And, since taking office in January, we have been working to restructure the Attorney General’s Office to better meet the needs of the state.
If you haven’t seen my stump speech, watch it here.
