The 2021 legislative session in Jackson is formally over. State senators and representatives have now returned home.
Here are some of the ways in which we helped advance the cause of economic freedom and limited government during the 2021 session:
- Protecting Women’s Sports: The MCPP led the charge for the Fairness Act (SB 2536) in order to ensure that the transgender agenda did not trump the rights of female athletes to compete fairly against other female athletes. We were the second state in America to enact such legislation.
- Reducing Barriers to Work: We led the way in getting a law (HB 1263) passed that makes it easier for new residents to obtain a Mississippi occupational license. This legislation builds on the best-in-the-nation Military Family Freedom Act we passed last year. We are the 8th state in the country to pass this innovative reform.
- Preventing Welfare Expansion: The best program to defeat poverty is a job. We helped head off attempts to increase welfare dependency in our state, which we believe would have entrenched poverty.
- Advancing Economic Freedom: Inspired by the hard work of our litigation center, the Mississippi Justice Institute, we spearheaded a reform (HB 1312) that allows individuals in select fields of cosmetology to practice their profession without acquiring thousands of hours of training.
Perhaps the most eye-catching idea during the 2021 session was the proposal put forward by Speaker Philip Gunn to eliminate the state income tax. While this initiative has not progressed into law, we want to be sure that if and when a further proposal to axe the income tax is put forward in the 2022 session, it is a plan that a broad coalition is able to rally behind.
