On August 31, 2026, at approximately 9:31 p.m., the Magee Police Department received a call from a female reporting that shots were being fired and that multiple individuals were involved.
Officers responded within minutes and found no evidence of a disturbance or shooting. While officers were still in the area investigating the original report, additional calls were received from the same caller, including another report approximately seven minutes later claiming that a shooting was taking place. Officers again found no evidence that a shooting had occurred.
Following further investigation, dispatchers were able to identify the location associated with the calls. Melody Monique Grubbs was subsequently arrested and charged with false reporting of a crime.
We are aware that the initial reported shooting was posted through Crime Radar. Please understand that, based on our investigation, officers found no evidence that a shooting occurred.
False reports involving shootings or other serious crimes are taken seriously. These calls send officers into situations believing lives may be in immediate danger, pull emergency resources away from legitimate calls for service, and unnecessarily cause concern within the community. We will not tolerate the intentional misuse of emergency or law enforcement resources.
We would also like to thank the Simpson County Sheriff’s Office for its quick response and assistance at the scene.
As with any criminal charge, the accused is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law. Charges may change, remain the same, or be dismissed as the case proceeds through the justice system.
